This “backyard” reception has taken the meaning to a whole new level. When i met Chris and Mila at Mila’s parents’ home just outside Franschhoek, my jaw just dropped. On that day the sun was shining and the feel was completely different. The morning

of the wedding itself, it was raaaaaaining but the lighting we got in the couple shoot was just phonominal. Not something a “good-weather-day” could offer.

They got married in a tiny chapel on Solms Delta Farm, not too far from where the reception was held. The “tents” were put up in the backyard, next to mila’s parents’ house. These are so many aspects of the wedding i loved: The guesthouse mila got dressed in, the bridal party, the outfits, the lighting, the location, the decor (BEAUTIFUL), Chris and Mila’s respect for each other.

What a sweet day! I could not stop looking at these cakes. I photographed them from all angles and just loved the detail on them.

In between, i could not stop laughing at Maggi! She has susch a good sense of humour, its just awesome spending time with her. She did not close an eye the night before, since she had to make these beautiful cakes while she still had other orders to deliver. Well done Maggi! And thanks so much i could do the shoot, i loooooved every minute of it.

Ek wens so ek kon nou die eerste foto van my en Mariné vir julle wys. Ek dink ons was in SubA of SubB en Mariné het partytjie gehou waar ons ons mammas se klere aangetrek het. As Mariné dalk die foto kan opspoor, sal ek dit post. Dit was vet pret! Ov

ersized skoene en 80′s klere, handsakke en rooi wange en lippe.

Daarna was daar nog kuiers op ons plaas en vele ekstra Duitse klasse vir my by hulle huis. Sy is een van die mense met die meeste geduld wat ek in my lewe al gesien het. Sy was juis weer besig om iets vir my te verduidelik toe die Twin Towers geval het. Ons was in matriek en eks seker sy het weer alles vanaf St.7 se werk verduidelik, sodat sy seker is ek verstaan mooi. Hier is ons Duitse klas:

Maar hierdie dag was sy ‘n bruid. ‘n Pragtige een. Sy is een van daardie mense wat altyd ‘n twinkle in haar oog het, maar hierdie dag was dit net nog meer sigbaar. En veral as sy vir Len kyk.

Mariné en Len, dit was vir ‘n huge voorreg om die dag met julle te kon deel. Nie eers die reën en veranderende planne kon julle bietjie negatief maak nie. Mag die res van julle lewens so wees. Geniet julle kiekies!!!

Every now and then you come across a project that make you step back and realize there is still lots and lots of HOPE left on this earth. When i learned about the Scas Biker Kids that is right here in my town of Stellenbosch, I asked if I could spend

an afternoon with them, taking a few images. It really was an eye opener. This Scas team is really putting their lives into what they are doing and the goal they have. Since im not the best with words, i asked Jan to write a few words:

The Jonkershoek Biker Kids; project by SCAS Cycling:

SCAS Cycling is a cycling ministry based in the Jonkershoek Valley outside Stellenbosch. Our Development Cycling Programme involves life skills development through Whole Life Coaching. We have a big passion to see the youth of our nation reach their dreams and potential, since they are the next generation of leaders. We strive to create opportunities for them to grow in a personal capacity and influence the society around them in a good way. This project has contributed to great improvements in the lives of the members and we are excited to see growth in the near future.

I also asked them what they need to keep this project running. His reply:

There is a great need and we invite any willing party or individual to assist in changing young lives. The following are areas of need:

• Five more bicycles at around R 5000/bike, bike donations are welcome, even older and cheaper ones (mtb or road).
• Cycling equipment, spare parts, gear or kit (old or new).
• Volunteers to ride with the group and teach skills. Riding times: Monday to Friday around 3:30pm and weekends, around Stellenbosch.
• Volunteer and assistance with organizing of fundraisers.
• Prayer. Please send us your email and we’ll subscribe you to our news and prayer mailing list.
• Monthly or once off financial donations (maintenance, admin and events costs add up).

Die hele dag het so ‘n sagte gevoel aan gehad. Alriëtte het nie ophou smile (of straal) nie. Niaan kon nie wag om vir Alriëtte in die isle af te sien stap nie. Was self maar moeilik om hom te sien sonder ‘n smile.

Alriëtte se familie het gewoon op Groenrivier en haar oupa het jare terug die skuur reggemaak vir haar tannie se troue, wat toe die eerste op die plaas was. Dis vir my so awesome dat Alriëtte-hulle ook daar kon trou. Oupa is ongelukkig nie meer hier om dit saam te kon beleef nie, maar ek is seker hy sou met ‘n brieë bors daar gesit het.

Niaan en Alriette, dit was vir my soooo lekker om by julle troue te kon wees. Baie blessings vir julle huwelik en alles wat julle daar in Oudtshoorn aanpak!

Charl en Crystal is van daardie coupels by wie mens sommer wil gaan kuier. Lekker mense, jy weet! Ek ken vir Crystal al ‘n rukkie en dit was soooo lekker om haar verloofde te ontmoet en hulle interaksie te sien. Hulle is gek oor mekaar en dit lyk of hulle sommer net hulleself kan wees by mekaar. Crystal se idees vir die shoot was eindeloos en ek het dit so geniet om hulle kiekies te neem.

Baie baie dankie aan Jam and Pajamas dat ons in julle AWESOME space kon shoot. Julle was net vriendelik en verwelkomend!

Die dag wat ek vir Elmien en die fam in Kaapstad gaan afneem het, was hulle almal besig om vir Elmien te help wat kort van tevore getrek het. Daar is net iets aan “familie” wat my altyd ‘n warm gevoel in my hart sal gee. Haar ouers het ver uit die Karoo gery om te kom help en Elmien het sommer van die kans gebruik te maak dat ons bietjie familie foto’s neem. Dink dis ‘n oulike idee! Dankie julle! I met Heather about 5 years ago, when we attended the same “small group” at Shofar Christian Church. I remember this student that always laughed (even if she went through tough times) but yet was so honest and truthful. She was a joy to be around.

By now Heather is my friend. She is beautiful, wise and gives awesome advice. (And is aWeSoMely crazy.) She also became a wife and photographer! Make sure to go check out her word. Jaco en Marilize straal. As jy vir hulle kyk weet jy hulle het mekaar sommer baie lief. Hulle is sag, maar vol engergie en jy kan sien hoe hulle vir hulle vriende en familie omgee. Pasch en Sainkie is jonk, passievol en hardwerkend. Mens kan hulle in aksie sien by hulle pragtige restaurant, Dutch East in Franschhoek. Wat ek die meeeeeste van hulle hou…is hoe hulle vir mekaar kyk en hoe hulle saam kan lag. Hulle is so ‘n oulike couple en die shoot was vir my een groot bederf.

It was such a treat photographing Jolandi, Pieter and little Nina. Jolandi and I went to the same preprimary school in Caledon and I still remember one specific day that we were hiding little “treasures” everywhere. Our

treasures were mostly stones and leaves, but we decided that years later we would go back and find it again. I think the memory of that fun day is the treasure now…and seeing Jolandi and Pieter with little Nina is the jackpot. She is beautiful and even though she was sooo tired during the first part of the shoot, she was still so cute and friendly!
