Do you remember my good friend Glenys, who’s engagement I photographed in California? (Most romantic, well planned, beautiful day!!! ) Well, the 2 of them are 3 now! Little Arrow joined this world in June – basically a miracle baby en he is loved so much already! (Especially by his tannie Zellie. :))
Glenys came to SA for a visit and we decided to do a mini adventure day. We packed the car with baby stuff and my camera and off we went. I think creation knew how much Glenys loves SA, so it showed off a bit.
Next time I’m hoping for the full package deal that includes you.)

Ag my words are failing me again. Lindy is such a dear friend of mine, and seeing her getting married to Fanie literally gives me a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart. I witnessed how the families and friends pulled out all stops to help and make this day special for these 2. (It says something about you guys!)
The farm and location was perfect for the day. It is an hours drive from Graaff Reinet, with no cellphone signal. (It was also the location for Karoo Ranching filmfest I photographed a year ago)
Seeing Lindy going through the process of “becoming a bride” was beautiful. And WHAT A BRIDE SHE WAS! And Fany literally did not stop smiling. I LOVE SEEING YOU 2 TOGETHER!

Enjoy your images Fanie + Lindy. There are wayyyy to many for a blogpost, but my heart could not leave any of them out. Julle is freakin’ awesome! Lekker kyk en herleef.
Ek is opgewonde oor julle pad vorentoe. <3

Sometimes from the get go you know people are going to have an influence on your life. How glad am I that I got to meet the Nomavukas a few years ago! They challenged my thinking, they work hard to see change in their community, they make good coffee, love well + intentionally…and then they are SUPER good looking too!

Thank you SO much that I could photograph you as a family. I looooooove you! Keep on shining. <3

Nuwe seisoen mater, spring has sprung!

Lekker kyk! xxx

Back in 2009, when I photographed my South African friend’s American friends’ wedding in Denver USA, I never would have thought that our paths would cross again in such a significant way. Fast forward 9 years and today I got to document them meeting their 2 adoptive children, 30mins from where I live. WHAT an amazing privilege! I witnessed so many moments today – it is actually hard to put into words!
Thank you Ben and Marybeth that I could share in seeing, experiencing and photographing the tangible love today. You are now a family of 7! (Two of their sons are back at home, waiting to meet their new siblings.)

Enjoy the memories guys! I loooooove how our worlds collided…

Julle het so vining in my hart gekruip! So dankie dat ek julle kon afneem en ek kan nie dink aan ‘n beter plek vir julle as om by die “wanneer trou jy?” show te ontmoet nie.

Julle storie praat van hoop. Ek sien die liefde. En weet van die geloof! <3

I’ve been thinking about family shoots and the way I’m approaching it more and more that last couple of months. Yes, an all smiley family picture where everyone is looking at the camera is great. (Especially if you actually manage it with kids :)) But…that is not the part that makes my heart excited about families and family-life.

I’ve been thinking about my personal favorite images while growing up. (Most all of my albums got stolen, but that story is for another day.) Many times these specific images give little clues of the whereabouts e.g. where we lived and the things that was a trademarks of my age…or your parent’s age. One of my most prized images of my late dad, is one where you can see his deep laughing wrinkles. Was it his best angle? No. Could I see his wrinkles? Yes :) Does it make my heart feel something? Absolutely YES!

After the shoot with Wade, Gretchen and Guinnie (isn’t her name the best!?) Gretchen and I talked over coffee and some of her mom’s home made cookies. She told me a bit about her fears around the shoot and everything that isn’t quite “Pinterest looking.” The funny thing is, I registered 90% of those same fears just before I had a shoot done for my new site’s portraits. Some of them “valid” (because  everything ‘needs to be perfect’) but most of them just fears because I measured myself to others. It made me think of this quote: “many people fail because they try to copy others, not realizing that everyone has a different question paper.”

And back to the family shoots – it is exactly the fact that every family is so unique, that makes me enjoy shooting it so much.
So please allow your you-ness to shine. It gives the world so much flavour…

Grethen was so awesome to write down some of her thoughts. Please make sure to read it below the images!

Dankie Gretchen + Wade. That I could photograph you, get to meet you and that you were so brave in all of this. I looooooved your family’s flavour! :P
