Before I could write this post, i had to chew a bit on what happened. Thanks for your patience Maria! (:  Here goes…

Maria is my “Afrikaans-German” friend. She grew up in Germany and studied in Stellenbosch, where she learned to speak Afrikaans fluently. Currently she is living in Hamburg, but came to SA for vacation. I’ve done a shoot with Maria back in 2009 (see it HERE) and we decided to do a follow-up. I never knew she can grow to become even more beautiful!!!!

The shoot started off with a hair and makeup session. (Thank you Madeleen for doing SUCH AN AWESOME job with the makeup and Julien for her beautiful curls!) The lighting was so beautiful on the day that i started shooting in Welgevonden Estate Stellenbosch, since it was on our way to the spot i chose for the shoot. Sometimes a shoot just works and this was one of those. Maria was being a star and the light and location were all working together. I still showed Maria a few of the images because I was so excited about them. Her little face beamed even more.

As I was driving out of the Welgevonden gates, I saw even more prettiness. Soft light and purple flowers in an open field. Living in SA, I scanned the area and only saw 2 guards on the opposite side of the road. We continued with the shoot. After a few minutes of forgetting about everything that was going on around us, Maria looked up and warned me that there was someone coming up behind me. When i looked around the man was about 5m from me. The next minute (or rather millisecond) he pulled out a knife and ran towards me, demanding my camera. In the process of trying to move away and getting the camera off my neck, i fell over backwards and then (rather desperately) handed him what he asked for: Canon 5D MkIII with the Canon 50mm f1.2. I so badly want to ask for the memory-card of the shoot, but I just knew discussing this matter was not an option with this wild-eyed man. He demanded my Shootsac with my other lenses, memory-cards and car keys, but before I handed it over, Maria started screaming- like only a woman can. I joined the choir. At this stage the man became distracted and i tried to kick him…where no man wants to be kicked. I still don’t know if i succeeded – the adrenaline was pumping so much – but he left. Not really running. Just jogging. Past the 2 onlooking guards of a new residential development. We then saw that a second man was also hanging around, leaving the same time as Wild-Eye-Man.

We were rattled, shocked and VERY angry about losing the images – but safe and unharmed. After a yelling session directed towards the guards, a drive to the inside of the Welgevonden-gates, a thank-you-prayer and a teary call to my mother we decided to continue the shoot. I still had my backup camera and other lenses and Maria was showing her awesome and brave character. We were drying a few tears while shooting, but we decided it’s like horse riding – if you fall off, you get right back on.

Our church family was AMAZING. So many people, as well as the leaders supported us by praying for us and making sure we really were ok. Maria and I ask each other every so often how we are doing, how God is dealing with the fear in our lives etc etc. It’s great to have people like that in your life.

Maria, thank you for being my friend.

We prayed for at least 10 photos. God is faithful:

Chantal (as well as Glenys and Elmarie) and I know each other since primary school. We were family friends and we spend HOURS horse riding, drawing, playing with their Jack Russell-dog, finding chameleons in the garden and then of coarse fighting with our brothers. When i was 14 they moved to USA and my heart was broken! We wrote endless letters…and Chantal’s letters are the BEST. Her handwriting and words are beautiful and she writes in all directions, colours and sizes. (Chantal, i think i want a handwritten card for my birthday in January please! )

When i was in Denver for David and Emily’s wedding, the Haas family came all the way from Albuquerque (New Mexico) to Denver to visit. Jason (chantal’s husband) was so awesome, looking after the older 2 girls while we went garage-sale-shopping with the 2 babies. He also made the most amazing hoender potjie. Yes, he is American, but Chantal’s dad taught him well!

And of coarse we had to take a few pics:

(PS: Kira, we missed you!)

I am definitely going to be one of those grannies with a photo-album in my handbag. (Or maybe by then, it will be some sort of iPad.)

I just LOVE my brother’s little son, Markus. This was not a planned shoot at all, just a few memories from a recent visit. Enjoy!

Monday morning was my “Saturday.” I took time off and went to Kamersvol Geskenke with 2 friends and loved every moment of it! People are so creative! I loved seeing old friends exhibiting like Annehette from Patatie, Justin  Southey, Charlotte from Krummels Kuns Koekies, Okasie, Leipzig, the ladies of “The Pretty Blog” and Vanessa with her “Out of the ordinary frames“!

I also bought a few new things for my room and love it so much, i just HAD to share them.

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed as I’m sitting here. Its by birthday i am being overflowed by love, care, grace, encouragement, presents, phone calls, facebook messages, prayers, thoughts and… and… and… There literally is just one thing that can top all of this  and that is the fact that God came (AGAIN) and told me that He loves me. And nothing can change that fact. Not even that i often run away from that very love, because my heart just cannot grasp that the King could love ME that much. So yes, I’m overwhelmed, but thankful and ready for what God has in store for me this year.

Thanks to every single one who is adding so much to my day!

And just because i know my earthly dad would have phoned me too today, here is a jewel of a photo i found of him:

So you have met MG and Tjaart, but here is one of my 2 sisters, Annelle! (Ok stepsister, but actually i do think we rrrrrreally are sisters, ok!?)

Annelle is one of the kindest, warmest, big-hearted girls I’ve ever met. There is not much of a chance of something like personal space with her; she jumps right into your heart. She has listened to endless stories and challenges of mine while sitting in the bath. We’ve shared many tears, she has made me laugh like only a sister can and is always-always-always willing to listen.

To be in BJ’s and Annelle’s company, is pure joy. And i cannot wait for their wedding! I will be walking down the isle (as a bridesmaid) too. #superexcited!

Geniet julle kiekies! Dit was so ‘n lekker middag saam met die 2 van julle. Ons maak weer so op julle 50ste huweliksherdenking, ok!

So…as i said in one of my previous blog-posts, I’m flying it the UK for the first time tomorrow! (Also the reason why my blogging was a tad slow the last week or so!)

I will be gone for 2 weeks, but will keep blogging and will occasionally answer my emails…when my feet are sore from all the exploring!

I am really looking forward seeing places I’ve only seen on postcard, exploring little alleys, taking photos, spending time with my school-friends, Kira and Emma, and doing some winter shopping. Oh and of course meeting some UK photographers!

I’m currently selecting images from this wedding i did in Lydenburg and i could not help to notice that this little boys face looks like what I’m feeling in my heart! How adorable is he?

 PS: Happy 40th my Moni-friend!!!!

This weekend was one of those where you know something happened in your heart, even though you do not have words for all the feelings.

When my dad committed suicide, it was not easy to see “that God makes everything work together for my good, because I love Him.” But I have to and want to trust Him. He has always proofed himself trustworthy. So this weekend, i went to the Shofar Conference. God was so present. Someone who was at the conference, came to me. She told me that she forgave her dad for something he did 13 years ago, after she read the blog post on my dad. I could not stop crying. Something great came from my dad’s death!

This morning i got a mail from another girl: “I just want to share this with you… My dad phoned me this morning. For no reason, just to hear how I am doing…” She barely had contact with her dad and then she started taking a very bold step – contacting him first. And then she received his phone call this morning. (Zelli: happy face!!!)

None of this is because I had anything to do with it. It’s God at work. He is encouraging me and showing me that He is still in control and still trust worth. Suddenly I saw, once again, how He can take one horrible situation and let good things come from it. It feels like He build a foundation for me (with all my imperfections and my brokenness) again this weekend, just from being in His presence. Awesome!!!

Something els. I was very disappointed about the fact that I couldn’t finish my holiday in south east Asia in June/July. I was looking forward to 6 weeks of traveling and spending time with friends, but I had to came back after 10 days. Well….

Clients of mine just confirmed a pregnancy shoot … in LONDON!!!! (I’ve never been there before.) …and one of my closest friends, Kira, is joining me! (Zelli: happy face again!) I am so excited and grateful. Im learning:

“to trust You.
Just to know,
You got everything under control.”
-Trust by Kristene Meuller

And as they say, a post is not a post without a few pictures. Here are some of my favorites from the Shofar Conference this weekend:
